What to expect

what
Come behind the scenes with me!
Step inside my studio and experience what goes into a newborn session from start to finish! From preparing my setups and wrapping to posing, lighting, camera settings, and newborn safety, you'll get an up-close look at my entire workflow. I'll share my techniques, explain my decisions, and answer your questions along the way!
how
Watch. Learn. Capture.
You'll observe me working with a real newborn model as I demonstrate my wrapping, posing, and lighting techniques. I'll walk you through each setup, explaining not just HOW I achieve each pose, but WHY. You'll also have opportunities to photograph the baby under my direction while I handle all posing and positioning. Safety always comes first!
when
One day. So much knowledge.
Your mentorship includes up to five hours of private, in-studio education! We'll begin approximately one hour before our newborn model arrives to discuss preparation, equipment, and workflow, followed by up to three hours of live newborn photography.
Within two weeks, we'll reconnect for a one-hour Zoom editing session to walk through my post-processing workflow and bring everything together!
why
Because seeing it changes everything.
There's something different about watching a newborn session unfold in real time. You'll see how I read baby's cues, make adjustments, transition between poses, and navigate the unexpected moments that come with newborn photography. My goal is to help you walk away with a deeper understanding of the process, stronger technical knowledge, and greater confidence in your own newborn sessions.
FAQ
Will we be working with a real newborn?
YES! A newborn model will be arranged for our mentorship, typically between 7–21 days old. You'll get to observe an actual newborn session from start to finish, including all the little adjustments and unexpected moments that come with working with a real baby!
Will I get to pose or handle the newborn?
For safety reasons, all newborn handling, wrapping, and posing will be performed by me. You'll have the opportunity to photograph the baby under my direction, but this is an observation-based mentorship rather than a hands-on posing class. You'll still get an up-close look at every step of my process!
What will we cover during our time together?
A little bit of everything newborn photography! We'll walk through studio preparation, wrapping techniques, posing transitions, lighting placement, camera settings, prop setups, and safety practices. I'll explain what I'm doing and WHY throughout the session, so you're learning the reasoning behind each decision.
Will we cover specific newborn poses?
I'll demonstrate my newborn posing workflow throughout our live session. However, every baby is different! I follow a 100% baby-led approach, meaning we'll adjust our posing based on the newborn's comfort, cooperation, and individual needs. Specific poses and setups cannot be guaranteed.
Do I need to bring my own camera?
Yes! I encourage you to bring your own camera and lenses so you can practice photographing the newborn using equipment you're already familiar with. I'll guide you through camera settings and lighting adjustments along the way.
Is editing included in the mentorship?
Absolutely! Within two weeks of your in-person mentorship, we'll schedule a separate one-hour Zoom call dedicated to editing. I'll walk you through my editing workflow and answer questions about my post-processing techniques.
Is this mentorship beginner-friendly?
This mentorship is best suited for photographers who already have a basic understanding of their camera, exposure, and photography fundamentals. Previous newborn photography experience is preferred, but you do not need to have mastered newborn posing before attending!
Can I ask questions throughout the mentorship?
PLEASE DO! I want you to ask questions, take notes, and really understand what you're observing. Whether you're curious about a lighting adjustment, posing transition, or how I handle a particular situation, I'm happy to explain my process throughout our time together.
Where does the mentorship take place?
Your mentorship will take place at my private photography studio in Springfield, Virginia. You'll have the opportunity to see my studio setup, equipment, props, and how I prepare my space for newborn sessions.
What happens if the newborn doesn't cooperate?
That's part of newborn photography! Babies have their own schedules, needs, and preferences. We'll always prioritize the baby's safety and comfort, even if that means taking feeding breaks, changing setups, or skipping certain poses. Learning how to adapt is one of the most valuable parts of observing a real newborn session!
